The Lifesaving Importance of Flu Vaccines for Children: A Conversation on Prevention

As the leaves start to turn and the days grow shorter, we are reminded of the approaching flu season. But this year, there’s an added layer of concern among medical professionals, particularly in the D.C. area, about the number of eligible children who may not receive their flu vaccine. Could this oversight result in a spike in flu cases—or worse? Let’s delve into why getting the flu vaccine for your child is more critical now than ever before.

Why Should We Be Concerned About the Flu This Year?

“Many people worry about ‘Oh, it’s another shot for my child,'” says Dr. Christina Brown, a pediatrician with Kaiser Permanente. “Yes, it is. But it’s usually just once a year, and it helps protect your child during flu season.”

Dr. Brown’s concerns echo a new CDC report highlighting the importance of not becoming complacent about flu vaccinations, especially in young children. Alarmingly, 83% of the 199 child flu deaths in 2023 were among those who were eligible for vaccination but did not receive it. The numbers are already unsettling this year, with two pediatric deaths reported in September alone.

Aren’t Young Children at Lower Risk?

It might seem logical to think that young, healthy children are less vulnerable, but Dr. Brown warns that this is a dangerous misconception. “Children under 5 are at increased risk of flu,” she says. The flu does not discriminate; half of the children who died from flu complications had no preexisting medical conditions.

“Even healthy children under 5 are at increased risk of flu,” Dr. Brown reiterates. “The flu kills healthy children every year. I’ve watched a perfectly healthy teenager die from the flu. It’s something I’ll never forget.”

What About Vaccine Fatigue?

“Parents are tired of talking about vaccines. Pediatricians are too!” Dr. Brown acknowledges the fatigue that has set in, especially post-pandemic. However, she emphasizes that this preventive measure can make all the difference. According to the CDC, getting the flu shot can reduce doctor visits by two-thirds and hospitalizations related to the flu by half.

“Flu shots save lives,” Dr. Brown underscores. “We’re really relying on parents of infants to be getting vaccinated to protect those children,” she adds, noting that pregnant women can also receive the vaccine to pass antibodies to their babies.

Is the Flu Vaccine Safe?

One common concern is the safety of the flu vaccine. Dr. Brown is keen to dispel any myths. “You cannot get the flu from getting the flu vaccine,” she explains. “It’s just not possible. The flu vaccine is an inactivated version of the flu, so it helps your body build that immune response but cannot give you the flu.”

The risks of getting the flu vaccine are minimal, and even if there are mild side effects, they typically wear off within a day. “It’s important not to buy into misinformation that’s out there,” Dr. Brown advises.

When Should We Get Vaccinated?

With two pediatric deaths already reported in September, the urgency is palpable. “I recommend getting yourself and your child vaccinated as early as possible this season,” Dr. Brown stresses. “I vaccinate myself, my children, and I recommend it for anyone who is eligible.”

The time to act is now. Don’t wait for the flu season to peak; early vaccination can offer critical protection for your family.

In summary, the flu vaccine is a small but crucial step in safeguarding our children. As parents and caregivers, it’s our responsibility to ensure our kids are protected. Let’s heed the advice of medical professionals like Dr. Brown: flu shots save lives.
